Are the treatments safe?
Botulinum toxin
Botulinum toxin is a protein that is produced by a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. It is widely used in medical and cosmetic treatments to temporarily reduce or get rid of facial wrinkles and other signs of aging. Here is how Botulinum toxin works:
How does Botulinum toxin work?
Blocking Nerve Signals: Botulinum toxin works by stopping the nerves passing signals to the muscles to tighten (contract). When Botulinum toxin is injected into specific muscles, it stops the release of a chemical called acetylcholine which is the chemical that nerves use to make muscles tighten (contract).
Muscle Paralysis: By stopping the release of acetylcholine, Botulinum toxin causes the muscles being treated to be paralysed for a period of time. This means that the muscles can relax which prevents them from contracting (tightening) and forming wrinkles.
Cosmetic Applications
Wrinkle Reduction:
Botulinum toxin is most commonly used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, which are caused by doing the same facial movements over years. These include crow’s feet (around the eyes), frown lines (between the eyebrows), and forehead lines.
Facial Contouring:
Botulinum toxin can be used for facial slimming, such as reducing the size of the chewing (masseter) muscles to create a more contoured jawline.
Medical Applications
Hyperhidrosis:
Botulinum toxin can treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) by blocking the nerves that make sweat glands work.
What can I expect during my Botulinum toxin treatment?
Consultation:
A thorough consultation is essential to discuss your concerns, your medical history, and treatment goals.
Preparation:
Your skin is cleaned, and sometimes a topical (on the surface of your skin) anaesthetic is applied to minimise any discomfort.
Injection:
Using a fine needle, your practitioner injects small amounts of Botulinum toxin into the targeted muscles. The number of injections and the amount of Botulinum toxin used depends on the treatment area and desired results.
Aftercare:
You are usually advised to avoid rubbing the treated area, strenuous exercise, and lying down for a few hours post-injection to prevent the Botulinum toxin from spreading to unintended areas.
What results can I expect from Botulinum toxin and how long will they last?
Onset of Effects:
The effects of Botulinum toxin typically begin to appear within 3 to 5 days, with full results visible within 1 to 2 weeks.
Duration:
The effect of your treatment usually lasts for 3 to 6 months, after which time the muscle(s) gradually begin to contract again, and wrinkles may reappear.
Repeat treatments are necessary to maintain the results you have.
Does Botulinum toxin have any side effects?
Common Side Effects:
These may include temporary bruising, swelling, redness, and discomfort at the injection site. Some patients may experience headaches or flu-like symptoms.
Rare Complications:
More serious but rare side effects include drooping eyelids or eyebrows (ptosis), asymmetry, and unintended muscle paralysis. These are usually temporary and resolve as the Botulinum toxin wears off.
Qualified Practitioner:
Ensuring the procedures are performed by an experienced healthcare practitioner is critical to minimise risks and achieve the desired results.

Dermal Fillers
What are Dermal Fillers?
Type of Dermal Filler BW MedAesthetics will be using.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers:
This is the most common type of filler. HÀ is a naturally occurring substance (chemical) in the skin that helps maintain hydration (water in the skin) and volume. There are different brands available. Your practitioner will talk to you about which one would be most suitable for you.
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Volume Restoration:
As we age, the skin loses volume due to the decrease in fat, collagen, and hyaluronic acid in your body. Dermal fillers replace this lost volume, plumping up the skin and restoring a youthful appearance.
Smoothing Wrinkles:
Fillers can fill in wrinkles and fine lines, such as nasolabial folds (the lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth) and marionette lines (lines from the corners of the mouth down to the chin).
Enhancing Contours:
Fillers can enhance facial features such as the cheeks, lips, chin, and jawline. By adding volume to these areas, fillers can improve symmetry and definition.
What can I expect during my Dermal Filler treatment?
Consultation:
The process begins with a consultation to determine your needs and select the appropriate filler.
Preparation:
Your skin is cleaned, and sometimes a topical anaesthetic is applied to your skin to minimise discomfort.
Injection:
The filler will be injected into the targeted areas to be treated using a fine needle or cannula. Your practitioner may massage the area to ensure even distribution of the product.
Aftercare:
You will be given instructions to avoid strenuous activity, excessive sun, heat exposure, and not to touch or massage the treated areas immediately after the procedure.
Do Dermal Fillers have any side effects?
Side Effects:
Common side effects include swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at the injection site. These usually resolve within a few days.
Complications:
Rare complications can include infection, lumps, migration of the filler, and in severe cases, vascular occlusion leading to tissue damage.
To Note: Please ensure you use a Qualified Practitioner to perform your treatments:
It is crucial to have dermal fillers administered by a qualified and experienced healthcare professional to minimise risks and achieve optimal results. Beth, being a paramedic is also able to administer emergency medication in the unlikely case it is required.

Skin Boosters
What are Skin Boosters?
How Do Skin Boosters Work?
Stimulation of Collagen Production:
Collagen and Elastin Stimulation:
By creating micro-injuries in the skin through the injection process, skin boosters can stimulate the skin’s natural healing response, promoting the production of collagen and elastin. This results in improved skin texture and firmness over time.
Improvement in Skin Quality:
Enhanced Elasticity and Firmness:
The increased hydration and collagen stimulation lead to more elastic and firmer skin.
Smoothing Fine Lines and Wrinkles:
While not as dramatic as traditional fillers, skin boosters can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by plumping up the skin and improving its texture.
Treatment Areas
Face:
Commonly treated areas include the cheeks, forehead, and around the mouth.
Neck and Décolletage:
These areas can benefit from improved hydration and elasticity.
Hands:
Skin boosters can rejuvenate the appearance of ageing hands by enhancing hydration and skin quality.
What is the procedure for a Skin Booster Treatment?
Consultation:
You will have a consultation with your qualified practitioner to assess the skin condition and determine the appropriate treatment plan.
Preparation:
Your skin will be cleaned, and a topical (on the skin) anaesthetic may be applied to minimise discomfort.
Injection:
Using fine needles or cannulas, the skin booster is injected into the middle layers of the skin (the dermis). Multiple small injections are typically required to cover the treatment area.
Aftercare:
You will be advised to avoid intense exercise, excessive sun exposure, and touching or massaging the treated area immediately after the procedure.
What are the expected results and maintenance for Skin Boosters?
Immediate Effects:
Initial improvements in skin hydration and radiance can be seen within a few days after treatment.
Long-term Benefits:
Full results, including improved texture and elasticity, typically develop over a few weeks as collagen production is stimulated.
Duration:
The effects of skin boosters can last from 6 months to a year, depending on the product used and individual skin characteristics.
Maintenance:
Periodic treatments (every 6 to 12 months) are recommended to maintain the results.
What are the Safety considerations and potential side effects of Skin Boosters?
Common Side Effects:
Temporary swelling, redness, bruising, and slight discomfort at the injection sites. These typically resolve within a few days.
Rare Complications:
As with any injectable treatment, there is a risk of infection, allergic reactions, and uneven results. These are rare when performed by a qualified professional.
Skin boosters are a versatile and effective treatment for enhancing skin hydration, elasticity, and overall quality. They offer a minimally invasive option for those looking to rejuvenate their skin without the need for more intensive procedures. Consulting with a qualified practitioner is essential to determine if skin boosters are suitable for your needs and to ensure safe and effective treatment.
Skin Peels
Skin peels are an effective treatment for improving the overall appearance and health of the skin. By choosing the appropriate type of peel and following proper aftercare, individuals can achieve significant improvements in skin texture, tone, and clarity. Consulting with a qualified skincare professional is essential to determine the best peel for your specific needs and to ensure a safe and effective procedure.
What are Skin Peels and how do they work?
What are the types of Skin Peels?
Superficial Peels:
Ingredients: Commonly use mild acids like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid.
Depth: These peels only go through the outermost layer of the skin (epidermis) (see diagram).
Uses: Effective for treating fine lines, mild skin discolouration, and improving skin texture.
Medium Peels:
Ingredients: Typically use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or stronger concentrations of AHAs.
Depth: Penetrate the epidermis and reach the upper part of the dermis.
Uses: Suitable for treating moderate wrinkles, acne scars, and pigmentation issues.
Deep Peels:
Ingredients: Often use phenol or high concentrations of TCA.
Depth: Penetrate deep into the dermis.
Uses: Used for treating severe wrinkles, deep scars, and extensive sun damage.
How do Skin Peels work?
Application of the Chemical Solution:
The chosen chemical solution is applied to the skin using a brush, cotton ball, or gauze. The type and concentration of the chemical used depend on the desired depth of the peel and the specific skin concerns being addressed.
Exfoliation and Removal of Dead Skin Cells:
The chemical solution causes the top layers of the skin to peel off by breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells. This exfoliation process removes the damaged outer layers.
Stimulation of New Skin Growth:
As the old skin peels away, new skin cells are generated, resulting in a fresher, smoother, and more even-toned complexion. The peeling process also stimulates collagen production, which improves skin firmness and elasticity.
What is the procedure for a Skin Peel Treatment?
Consultation:
A thorough consultation with your practitioner to determine the appropriate type and strength of the peel for your individual skin type and concerns.
Preparation:
The skin is cleansed, and a pre-peel solution may be applied to remove any oils and ensure even penetration of the chemical solution.
Application:
The chemical solution is applied to the skin and left on for a specific period, depending on the type of peel. Some peels may cause a stinging or slight burning sensation.
Neutralisation and Removal:
For some peels, a neutralising solution is applied to stop the chemical reaction. The solution is then removed, and soothing products are applied to the skin.
What is the aftercare and expected recovery time for a Skin Peel?
Post-Peel Care:
It is crucial to follow post-peel care instructions, which typically include keeping the skin moisturised, avoiding sun exposure, and not picking at peeling skin.
Healing Time:
Superficial peels have minimal recovery time, with mild redness and flaking for a few days. Medium peels may require a week or more for full recovery, while deep peels can have significant recovery time, with swelling, redness, and peeling lasting several weeks.
Sun Protection:
Using broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential after a peel to protect the new, sensitive skin from UV damage.
What are the benefits of Skin Peels?
Improved Skin Texture and Tone:
Peels can smooth rough skin, reduce hyperpigmentation, and even out skin tone.
Reduced Fine Lines and Wrinkles:
By promoting collagen production, peels can help minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Acne and Scar Treatment:
Peels can reduce acne breakouts and improve the appearance of acne scars by exfoliating the skin and encouraging cell turnover.
Brightening:
Peels help in achieving a brighter, more radiant complexion by removing dull, dead skin cells.
What are the risks and considerations for Skin Peels?
Side Effects:
Potential side effects include redness, peeling, dryness, and increased sensitivity to sunlight.
Complications:
Rare complications can include infection, scarring, and changes in skin colour, especially in individuals with darker skin tones.
Qualified Practitioner:
Ensuring that the peel is performed by a qualified and experienced practitioner is crucial to minimise risks and achieve the desired results.
