Supporting Your RESULTS

Chemical peel treatment is often used as part of a wider skin health plan.

This may include treatments such as NeoGen Plasma for advanced skin regeneration or injectable treatments designed to support facial structure and balance.

Where appropriate your practitioner will advise whether combining treatments such as chemical peels with dermal filler or Sculptra treatment may be suitable to support longer term skin health and appearance.

Skin peels, also known as chemical peels, are cosmetic treatments used to improve the texture and appearance of the skin. A chemical solution is applied to the skin, causing controlled exfoliation of the outermost layers.

As the old skin peels away, new skin cells are generated and collagen production is stimulated, leaving skin smoother, clearer, more even in tone and firmer over time.

Superficial peels use mild acids such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid, and only treat the outermost layer of skin. They're effective for fine lines, mild discolouration and improving texture.

Medium peels use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or stronger AHA concentrations, reaching the upper dermis. They're suited to moderate wrinkles, acne scarring and pigmentation.

Deep peels use phenol or high-concentration TCA, penetrating deep into the dermis. These treat severe wrinkles, deep scarring and extensive sun damage.

Consultation: a thorough consultation with your practitioner determines the right type and strength of peel for your skin and concerns.

Preparation: the skin is cleansed, and a pre-peel solution may be applied to remove oils and ensure even penetration.

Application: the chemical solution is applied and left on for a set period depending on the peel. Some peels cause mild stinging or a slight burning sensation.

Neutralisation: for some peels, a neutralising solution stops the chemical reaction before it's removed and soothing products are applied.

Following your post-peel care instructions is important, this typically includes keeping the skin moisturised, avoiding sun exposure, and not picking at peeling skin.

Recovery time depends on the depth of the peel. Superficial peels have minimal downtime, with mild redness and flaking for a few days. Medium peels may need a week or more to fully heal, while deep peels can involve swelling, redness and peeling for several weeks.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential afterwards to protect new, sensitive skin from UV damage.

Skin peels can improve texture and tone, reduce hyperpigmentation, and even out skin tone. By promoting collagen production, they can also help minimise fine lines and wrinkles, reduce acne breakouts and improve the appearance of acne scarring, and leave the complexion brighter and more radiant.

Possible side effects include redness, peeling, dryness and increased sensitivity to sunlight. Rare complications can include infection, scarring and changes in skin colour, particularly in darker skin tones.

Having your peel performed by a qualified, experienced practitioner is essential to minimise these risks and achieve the results you want.
